Jae Choi designs systems for expert users in complex domains such as life sciences, biotech, and B2B SaaS.
Many of the problems he has worked on were not caused by missing features, but by systems that demanded too much cognitive effort from their users. His work focuses on reducing cognitive load by clarifying structure, ownership, and intent. He cares less about visual novelty and more about whether a system makes the right thing obvious; thus his style is a byproduct of designing for complex systems, where clarity matters more than expression, and he prioritizes clarity over decoration. He views design as a problem-solving discipline, on par with engineering or research.
Throughout his career, he has led end-to-end design processes from user research to final implementation. As a collaborator, he effectively manages communication with stakeholders, engineers, and product managers throughout the design process to ensure a smooth and successful delivery.
Previously, Jae was the founding product designer at a Series A biotech startup in Cambridge, where he established the company’s first design system, scaled the product to meet enterprise needs, and enabled scientists to work with greater clarity, control, and efficiency. In the absence of dedicated PMs and visual designers, he took on multiple roles, including shaping the product roadmap and producing marketing materials.
I . Discover — Identify and priortize problems through stakeholder and user interviews.
II . Define — Align with engineers and PMs to set design and engineering direction.
III . Design — Create prototypes that balance user needs with business goals by incorporating feedback from the real users and stakeholders.
IV . Validate — Test solutions with the users and gather feedback.
V . Refine — Iterate with the team to deliver a polished, effective product.
